vmware is pretty cool, my work mentor uses it to emulate linux running on his windows machine, with a bit of router configuring he has it so that his windows session gets one ip and his emulated linux session gets a different ip, he then can run an apache server on his linux box, which is simply a part of his windows box...many boxes in a box, fun. he can expense the expensiveness to work…because he can then use it to see what Expedia looks like in other oss/browsers. unfortunately such toys are beyond my meager buying power and it does not seem to have a educational version around...
today the company went to a Mariner’s game, the weather promised to be gloomy but turned out to be excellent and the game was about as good as one could hope for. there is a rather bland summary of the game is here.
today some of us in the transportation team celebrated the birthday of one of the devs, we went out to JaK’s Grill, an excellent steak house after the game. the unfortunate subject of my short time left was brought up, and several wondered if i was still going to grad school in the future. i shrugged, “i don’t know”, weather or not that is the truth is a tricky subject though. since february i’ve been veering away from the grad school path, perhaps not entirely in actions, but most definitely in my attitude and desires. fairly soon this choice will not be something i can idly speculate on. in september, it’s on with authority. i have to apply for jobs, write cover letters, take the GRE and CS GRE, fill out grad school apps and interview all round. this will be in addition to my senior project, which looms before me as a huge motherfucking challenge, my full load of non-trivial classes and my rather serious commitment to Claude as one of the student assistants for PLC. somewhere in there i have to figure out what I want to do with my immediate future. the magic eight-ball says: all signs point to less sleep. shit, my friends who took fast track are debating weather or not to take a light load for the year or graduate early, i still have to take a full load to graduate on time. while i’m yet to experience it, it seems the promise of an easy senior year will most likely be the biggest disappointment since high school. bleh.
it’s amazing how stupid people are with the Israel-Palestine situation (for accurate reporting, seek news sources out of the usa), even people who lead our fucking government (though this is old news, but it was news to me). people often wonder why the hell i’m so out of touch with what’s going on in the world, i usually play up the fact that i’m really busy and don’t watch tv, but more importantly, knowing what’s going on in the world depresses the fuck out of me. here i am leading my extremely comfortable life and in several parts of the world things are going to complete shit. how decidedly unpleasant, i believe i will avert my attention: if i sing to myself loud enough and only look at my petty concerns then it’s like everything else doesn’t exist, ah time to think more about my professional and non-existent romantic life, how sublime, i could think about myself all day! never gets old! my social conscious comes up every now and again but it is easily put down, like so, with my selfishness.

quickies
i chipped my tooth today biting the skin around my thumb. not a big chip, kinda took a small shaving off my front two bottom teeth…lesson learned? with this ancient habit, it seems doubtful.
i tell myself i’m all about self improvement, but i’ve let this habit stick around. in some ways it is helpful, it’s a testament for me at all times to remember how little self control i have. drugs? are you kidding? i would become a junkie so fast, look at me and my skin biting.
someone broke the build thursday night, usually this requires that the offender bring in 2 dozen krispy kreme donuts, instead the person brought in gin. i wouldn’t have indulged if a co-worked hadn’t stopped by with a smile, “time for some build break gin”. friday afternoon, this is going slow... lets make things interesting. so we went and got some gin and juice. Snoop Dogg didn’t ever release an “ office space” mix of "gin and juice", but it would have been appropriate (awww jeah, rolling in your office chair smokin’ and ah, sipping on gin and juice. laid back... with my mind on my stock options and my stock options on my mind.)
yeah... anyways, to make things a bit more interesting i invented the work drinking game:
every time i make a mistake, drink.
when i compile for 40 minutes and it breaks due to my carelessness, take a gulp.
every time someone walks by, drink.
every time i drink, drink again.
later on friday i went out with Logan on his 21st birthday, saturday was a massive xbox gathering, after which i didn’t really feel like doing anything, but started working a project i have mentioned before. sunday was a day of total laze.
Tom has set up a team blog after a quick conversation we had sunday, he’s cavalierly named it “ coadjuvant technology blog”, ms word doesn’t even know coadjuvant is a word. trust Tom to find the most obscure synonym for cooperative as possible. anyways, this will take out random technology postings from our ( Dave, Tom and i) regular blogs and put them in a place which is much easier for the general population to avoid. check it out if you’re interested in the future of information management or whatever else we decide to discuss.

i started to make a comment about Tom’s post regarding data all-purpose everything organization/whatever software, then i started to realize that it took up about a page and decided to make it a post instead, so if you don’t read his entry first this wont make too much sense.
yes, organizing your shit is tough. for instance, my backflip folders, i'm just categorizing links and even that's tough, is despair.com a humor site or a store? i’d like to be able to cross link it, but just have one object. this can be fairly easily achieved, if instead of storing the link in a folder, it was given meta-tags, i could have “depair.com: link information…, meta-data-category: humor, store, satire, office equipment” (unfortunately this functionality does not yet exist). you can’t really do that in windows file systems though, i mean you can make shortcuts, and that’s all and good up to a point, but you have to maintain the links and have a shortcut under every folder that’s applicable. now move it to the real world and then you try to organize things which are entirely different, music, school documents, personal files, contacts, emails, appointments, any organization you bring upon the mess is sure to not structure it entirely to my liking.
what i really need is something crazy stupid super smart. something where i can go to my “cousin Phil” directory and see my current contact information on Phil, see the mp3s of his music that i have, all the email messages we’ve sent each other, any conversations that i’ve thought were worth blogging or saving, those pictures of the kitty he has in Montreal, links to his mp3.com site, his school’s site, his dad’s business site, links to any information i have about his dad n sister n grandparents, who’s directories would link to my parent’s directories and my directories and to a bazillion other different things. and if he has web services or something, some of these things should be dynamically updated through the internet, perhaps he will only let family get to some of these things, this should be fine, perhaps it can find internet radio stations that play his mp3s, maybe it has links to radio stations Phil likes. also, i should be able to access this information from anywhere, with little inconvenience and total security.
perhaps this software that can do this can also get me a date this weekend also.
yeah, i don’t know how the hell software will ever be able to deliver this kind of perfect content organization. i will be interested to see how overture can achieve a little bit of this, it seems feasible that it might, but you’d have to do data entry for so so long (that and i don’t know what kind of linking mechanisms Dave has in mind, if any).
i should note that the Rose-Hulman Pike Computer Science Weblog Ring is not the first to notice this new problem in the age of entirely too much data. Bill Gates is focusing half his attention on the new windows, codenamed “longhorn” as Microsoft’s chief software architect. you can read all about it here. top question on the list of things for the new windows to look at: Why are my document files stored one way, my contacts another way, and my e-mail and instant-messaging buddy list still another, and why aren't they related to my calendar or to one another and easy to search en masse? anyways, this discussion is really interesting and i’m glad we’re getting into it. i am looking forward to where we can go from here.
damnit, it's 3am.

well it seems that threatening Tom over aim is not the way to get his blog rolling again, instead one must use the strong arm “deblogrollyerass” tactic that Dave has deployed. anyways, i was up late talking to Dave about the Overture project last night and we basically discussed some of the extremely difficult problems of UI when trying to make a general-all-purpose-everything, and then moved to a very cool subject of possibilities this has beyond the scope of normal applications, specifically opportunities that can arise from the fact that this is meant as a client-server application, which means that the server is always running. i’ve got some cool ideas in the works and have begun work on something Dave and i discussed. i would consider it something of a mini-killer-app for basically anyone who uses the internet, i will speak of it more after i get some more work done on it, and talk to my intellectual property consultant, hehe. Dave also decided to blog my five point plan for dating (which is great news to me, now i have a plan).
all this talk and thought and excitement kept me up a bit too late though, and i rolled into work shortly before noon. that’s bad, even if you are on flexhours. however it turned out to be ok because it turns out doing things before noon would have been difficult anyways. i am now splitting my attention too many ways. work, senior project, overture project and everyfuckingthing else, sheesh, i’m supposed to relax and have a good time this summer.
went to Club Impact tonight with someone i met on makeoutclub, it was pretty cool, punk/ska stuff, not nearly as much screaming as the show on monday, definitely a plus. i have to say i’m fairly jealous of the kids in Tacoma, Club Impact is an all ages venue with lots of character, all the kids know each other and the bands that play there, it’s much cooler than anything i know of in Chicago. so right, it was nice to get my pit on and be one of the bigger kids out there for once. skanking is something that’s fairly new to me, i knew of it, but never really saw it put into practice. most rock/punk shows i’ve been to never see any level of motion other than pushing, shoving, swaying back and fourth and of course, the ubiquitous head-bob. perhaps next time i’ll give it a whirl. anyways, it was a pretty good show: nice venue, excellent crowd energy, and the price was right ($6).
tomorrow night i think i'm going out for logan's 21st birthday, saturday promises alot of xbox action. fun fun.

sunday i didn’t do too much, worked on my senior project some and also went to the going away party of one of my co-workers Steve. Steve has been coaching me through what i’m going to do with my senior project (organization wise) and has taught me a lot about what the industry is like and stuff. anyways, he’s taking a break to go to army boot camp for a few months, so i got to say thanks/goodbye and have a strong drink with him.
monday’s status meeting was pretty cool. basically a large wing of air/car at Expedia development is under this one guy Sunil, there was a meeting to talk about how things are going, i’m about the only one on time and everyone else trickles in over the next ten minutes, not a single one of us has dress shoes on, most of us have our feet on the table, laughing, talking about the arcade box, etc and then we finally get to business. Sunil talks about some of his concerns then talks about the dev schedule, code complete for r13 very soon, everyone’s schedule right now puts them at completion in one week past, though it is slightly overestimated. Sunil smiles, “it looks like the date might be pushed, but let’s not count on that. i would like everyone to make an effort to hit this date... i think we can do it.” he says with a confidant smile, everyone looks a bit more serious, however no one disagrees, and it seemed like the whole room’s resolve strengthened. Sunil laid down a challenge for everyone in there to show that they are the fucking shit, and everyone seemed up for it. Sunil can put down this kind of challenge because he knows everyone working for him is excellent, and nobody has anything but respect for Sunil’s abilities as well. it’s the coolest thing i’ve ever seen a manager do, even better than when my boss at computer renaissance used to play worms with me.
after work monday i went to the Graceland for the “Burn it Down and Walk Away Tour, with Zao / Shai Hulud / Unearth / From Autumn to Ashes / Underoath / Coheed / Cambria”. i’ve never heard of any of these bands, someone from makeoutclub told me it would be a good show so i went. so, the show was pretty hardcore (punk), the venue was pretty cool, tons of character, not a lot of space. reminded me a lot of the Metro in Chicago, a small open floor – everything in the place is there purely for function... and spraypainted black. unfortunately it has much lower ceilings than the metro, so much so that i think i could touch them, that combined with a whole bunch of people crammed into a little space made it quite the oven. after watching two and a half acts i had about enough male screaming for one evening, while i enjoyed the energy, it doesn’t make up for lack of... goodness.
tuesday was one of those days i just planned on staying at work until they started vacuuming out my office, around midnight. so today was pretty boring, except the Expedia earnings report release and conference call today. it was the social event of the quarter as everyone abandoned their work to read the release and attend the conference call, which we were all allowed to listen to (you can hear it here). anyways, expedia made another killing, making huge profits which are just rolling up to huge cash assets, ready for more acquisitions or buying a building or whatever. unfortunately the economy being what it is, it still didn’t help expedia’s stock value in the market, which was clearly noted by some of the calling investors and on the faces of the employees who looked at the charts recently. however, i wouldn’t be worried if i were them, expedia’s making too much money to have a declining stock price for very long...

saturday:
met Nick at the bite of Seattle... it bit as promised, we left rather quickly. (pictures here). from there we went to the market cause i wanted to pick up some fruit. got some fruit and decided today might be a good day to cook something, so i picked up some salmon and artichokes and made some dinner. to make the salmon, i went to the local store to try to find a broiler plate, they didn’t have one per se, but they had a cookie sheet that came with something that looked a lot like a broiler grille. so i got it, it turns out the makers of the product more intend the grille to be used for putting hot cookies on, or something, and the cookie sheet was not beveled on all sides (couldn’t tell in store), making for very good spill possibilities, despite all this i decided to risk my 10$ worth of salmon anyways in this contrived scheme:
so it was definitely a college gourmet type adventure, and it actually worked out very well, the salmon didn’t drip that much and so did not spill off the cookie sheet, the grille was more than sufficient grade to handle the oven, and my hand was steady enough to keep the grille balanced on the cookie sheet. wooo:
steaming the artichokes was also an adventure, the pot that i have here is not nearly tall enough to stand them up, so we had to lie them on their sides, for maximal unbalanced cooking and so they would fit. even then the lid was off just enough to let all the steam out, of course the college gourmet has a nice solution to that problem:
but all in all, it came out pretty well, another resounding success with little thought ahead of time and a low cash setup.
from there we cleaned up and Nick went on his merry way, i then decided to stop by the Showbox for the “summer of love” party (techno). the Showbox is really cool and its too bad i haven’t gone to it before this. anyways, i had a great time, unfortunately the party ended at 1:30, which is just too damn early, there were also other complications... and to make a long story short, here’s how i told phil about it:
fifteenhex: i'm at this techno thing last night, and i'm dancing next to this girl for like, an hour and a half, and she keeps like, pointing at me and i'm giving her my attention
Phil: pointing at you?
fifteenhex: yeah...i donno
fifteenhex: like, i'd look at her and she'd look back and smile/laugh and point at me
fifteenhex: that probably sounds a bit more suggestive than i think it really was
Phil: heh..alrighty
fifteenhex: then, like, the music stops, they tell us to get the fuck out, we're both kinda standing there looking forward, i say "the liquer laws here suck", because they do (they shut down at 1:30), she doesnt respond, i dont even know if she heard me...then i bail
fifteenhex: dont ask me why, i just do... stupid stupid stupid
fifteenhex: so, yeah, that's the end
Phil: dammit
Phil: i hate that shit.
Phil: i probably would have bailed too
fifteenhex: i know... bleh, oh well, lesson learned i guess
fifteenhex: maybe
Phil: what's the lesson learned?
fifteenhex: dont do that again, or be faced with awful regrets
Phil: don't spill pina colada mix onto a TiBook?
fifteenhex: i think that's more of a classic lesson learned through traditional children's stories
fifteenhex: why, did you spill pina colada mix on a laptop?
Phil: well..i didn't
Phil: i saw it happened
Phil: and it wasn't pretty

went to the blogger meetup this evening (everyone coming here from that don’t forget to email me, i have the secret link to Ali’s message board). definitely an interesting look at what makes up the fabric of... well you know, see the people who make blogs and stuff. i have made a folder of blogs of the people who attended... if you’re so inclined to look. anyways, the whole thing went on a bit longer than i thought and i got back to work about 10:20 (a four hour break), i stayed till about 12:30 and realized that it would have been more productive if i hadn’t come back. also, there’s a meetup picture on alex’s seattle adventure.
so, this weekend stretches before me: a vast and unplanned expanse of time... i may just end up relaxing and catching up on things i meant to do these past few weeks, but knowing me, probably not...

what the...
so i was talking to my boss monday, saying something about doing an “office space style beat down” and the mantra of initech “is this GOOD for the company?” on something, and he goes “office space…that’s a movie right?” and my jaw drops. you’ve never seen office space? oh my gosh. i go back and ask my office mate, he hasn’t seen it either. this is freaky, i thought it was a total cult film for all techies. i think i’m going to schedule a faux meeting and play it for them, this is ridicules...

stupid brain
when ever you look up a word in the dictionary, you have to understand the words that explain the word’s meaning. given that, you can view the dictionary as a huge graph, with each word as a vertex, and connecting one way edges from a word to the words that define it (each edge represents dependency on the word pointed to). i bet the cycle complexity gets huge fast. i wonder how many words one must understand to be able to use the dictionary to leverage one’s knowledge of words, all the way up to knowing all the words.

sushi
sushi land, or sushi rand as it shows up on the credit card statement, is a pretty cool place. you sit around this bar where there is a conveyer belt that brings around plates of sushi, each color coded with a price (blue plates cost 2$, yellows cost 1$, etc), you sit down and pull anything off the belt that looks good, at the end the waitress counts up your plate stack and that’s your bill. i went there with some coworkers, my mentor Andrew was to my left and while eating i noticed there was music in the background... it’s familiar... oh, i know what this is... i turn to Andrew who asks me what i think of the place. “any place that serves sushi and plays the Beastie Boys is alright in my book” i tell him. ooo, that dish looks good...
change of plans
unfortunately the person who was supposed to go to the glass museum with me today never got back to me, this in conjunction with the fact that i got in late lead me to keep my normal work hours (i get to leave early tomorrow tho). however, i found out from one of my fellow interns that it was salsa night at the Century Ballroom a short while after i planed on getting home, so i went with two of my fellow interns and met up with another. i don’t know how to salsa, but i am enthusiastic in my badness, which doesn’t quite make up for it, but somehow makes it bearable. i picked up the basic step, the side-to-side step, the meringue and a bit of the spins (similar to swing, i took lessons about 18 months ago); pretty good considering it wasn’t a class.
this weekend: sailing? xbox. open tables at the liquid lounge. good food.

a year and a day
something i barely noticed was that today my web page / journal / stuff celebrates it’s one year and one day anniversary, you can easily check that by looking at my old public journal’s first entry dated 7/9/01.
admittedly, from September to December wasn’t anything to write home about as i hadn’t hoped onto the Blogger bandwagon at that point and so was updating by hand (or not as was the case) and i was busy being beaten with education, Rose-Hulman style, to the extreme.
one of the best life goals i think one can hope to achieve is Socrates’ famous instruction, “know thyself”. when one does not have a god or eternal life (ie, an atheist as myself at present) one must live with the fact that this is it, all of my experiences will be in this life and there is no relationship with a higher power to cultivate or figure out, but rather i will only have relationships with myself and with others (i also must use run-on sentences, a little known tenant of my atheism). this site has helped me with reguards to the former as expected and intended: by expressing my ideas and thoughts in semi-legible form i think i have really gotten to know exactly who i am better, additionally it is easy to turn back and see ideas i had in the past and possibly give me insight on how exactly i have developed as a person. however it has also helped with the latter a bit unexpectedly. because of the site, i have improved communications with my family and distant friends and perhaps given them a look at some of my thoughts that one might not otherwise have known. so long live alexlo.net... or something!
ooo, other site related news: i recently got my first ever “fan” mail on Sunday (thanks Morrie from Sydney). hehe
other news
it's fucking hot here, the office has ac but i am just wilting in my un-air conditioned apartment here, and it’s fucking midnight. sheesh. ah well, the heat here still doesn’t stand up to the kill the elderly heat (requires registration...) that Chicago gets in the summer, but I’ve got ac at home...
Dave (new url) has allowed public access to his project Overture (intro on his blog page) which is pretty neat, go check it out.
about 5pm today i’m supposed to go to the new Tacoma Museum of Glass, but the person i am supposed to meet isn’t getting in touch with me (damnit!). i guess it will have to be the typical alex lo adventure (the way of the single single man)... c’est la vie... or my life anyways heh.

pasta ala alex
this dish is key when living alone as it is a one dish meal that satisfies very little of your nutritional needs, however, more than meets money, time and taste constraints of you're busy student or aspiring real life person...
grab like, 8-16 ounces of pasta, 8 is usually enough to feed me, 16’s good to have a little leftovers, assuming you have anything to put them in. begin boiling your pasta around midnight, cook it until it’s on the soft side of crunchy and then go about 20 seconds more, it’s like el dente, only harder.
drain off the pasta and rinse it in cold water (this aids in making it nice and firm). shake dry in the strainer, dump on a plate, smother with olive oil, grade up your dried hunk of parmesan reggiano on it, stir with your fork, top with as much course ground pepper as your arms have the strength to grind out. bring to your computer desk, enjoy.
advantages:
don’t need any perishable items, the parmesan kinda is but it will last 3 months pretty easy.
cost: this basically costs the amount of the pasta and 25 cents for cheese, olive oil and pepper corns.
speed: this gets done really quickly, probably 10 minutes. another advantage is you only end up with three dirty dishes if you do it right, your fork, your plate, and the pot. the strainer doesn’t really need to be cleaned, and actually doesn’t have to be clean ahead of time because you dump a whole bunch of hot water on it before your pasta goes in it, effectively just in time (JIT for techies) cleaning it.
of course, it comes at the disadvantage of being only calories with no nutritional value to speak of. also, if you’re not on the alex lo 5k calories a day program, this could be a bit much.

happy birthday mom
as you could probably guess from the title, today is the birthday of the most special woman in my life, mom :) she has the luckiest birthday ever, 7/7...
of course, it is impossible to think about my life without my mother, she's been the most influential person in my development as a person and along with my father can be attributed all the apparent success my life has had.
of course, i am not there to say happy birthday to my mom for the second year in a row now and it probably wont be the last, nor was i there to make her breakfast in bed on mothers day... when will i do that ever again? unfortunately a post to my blog and a phone call is about the best i can do for one who has done so much for me. but she understands because she is just that cool.
happy birthday mom, i love you (!)
this evening i went to the Liquid Lounge at the Experience Music Project (not too far from my place) with Matt, one of my expedia co-workers who went to Rose. he's an amateur DJ and tonight was open tables night, you bring vinyl and headphones and they let you dj for a half hour (Matt did it, he's pretty good). i kinda learned to DJ at wmhd my sophmore year, we talked a bit about it and it reminded me how fun and frustrating that was. i hope someday i'll have a chance to really work on being good at it.

hike
Nick, one of my friends who graduated my freshman year, is now working at amazon.com, we’ve seen each other a few times and i even dragged him to the last supper club Wednesday night. today we went to Mount Rainier National Park and took a hike in the foothills of the ginormous Mt Rainier. it was really beautiful, and good to get out to nature. the seattle area is pretty cool because there's a little of everything near by: the ocean, fresh water lakes, mountains, forest, urban and suburban, beaches...
pictures have been added to alex's seattle adventure
over reaction
while taking pictures of some of the architecture of some of the federal buildings downtown last Saturday, i was instructed by a guard not to take any more pictures of the federal building or it's entrance. if i were about 3 years younger i probably would have told that guy to shove it up his ass, but the rebellious part of me has kind of fallen by the way side and instead i said "too late now..." and continued on my way. seriously, how paranoid are we going to get as a country, and how stupid are we going to be about it, do they think i couldnt get pictures of that building if i wanted? sheesh...
i am glad independence day went without incident, so i guess they're doing some stuff right.
the secret to having a "nice website" reveled
Logan (actual name hidden) (12:41:53 AM): Nice website.
fifteenhex (me) (12:42:17 AM): oh yeah, it's state of the art
fifteenhex (12:42:34 AM): black text on white backgrounds are tough to come by nowadays
L (12:42:55 AM): One of these days I'm gonna expend the effort to make one of my own... :-)
fifteenhex (12:43:17 AM): it's not hard
fifteenhex (12:43:23 AM): just dont worry about doing a good job
fifteenhex (12:43:25 AM): that's the key

back from the dead
well it seems Jeff has figured out the server problem and fixed it. yay. anyways i’ve been keeping busy here in Seattle, I’ve just finished my 5th week at work, only 6 left to go! crazy...
i’ve been going to the Last Supper Club a lot, three times since i last posted (tonight, Wednesday night, last Saturday night…). i’ve also been rehabbing my knees, eating seafood and relaxing with people from work. on the 4th several of us interns had a barbeque on the roof of our apartment building, we had a great view of the Elliott Bay fireworks on the Sound.
i’ve added a picture to alex’s seattle adventure...
added some links...
that’s all for tonight folks, i’m freaking beat…
