Once in a lifetime

I graduate tomorrow. The last few weeks I have been taking stock of what’s happened in the last four years. Where I am now, I did not see coming four years ago. It’s really bizarre how different things are for me now.

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?

I went to Sushi Umi (the really land-locked sushi bar) with Ariane a little while ago. I asked them when they last got fish, it was earlier that day, I look at the fish through the window. It looks pretty ok, I nod my approval sagely and order some.
I didn’t eat raw fish four years ago.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

I frequently dance with my friend Elizabeth. She told me "Alex, you’re so good at dancing and the most flexible guy I know [my back]." I didn’t only get decent at hip-hop dancing though, swing is where it’s at – I’m looking forward to getting much better at it in the future.
I don’t think I ever danced before I left high school.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

I washed my car by hand the first time not long ago – it actually felt pretty natural, washing my car.
It hit me half-way through – I didn’t even know how to drive in high school.

I’ve slightly increased my ability to relate to the fairer sex... Still yet to have been in a serious relationship...

Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was...

I never thought I would join a fraternity. It happened a mere eight weeks after I came to Rose. It’s been a big part of my reality since I joined, as I type I am in a fraternity house… that I live in.

Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

I’m listening to Paul van Dyk right now, he does really great trance. Talking to my friend Chris the other day, I was telling him about this sweet hard-house I had been listening to. I’m known in the house as “the techno guy”. I’ve learned the basics of DJing and hope to someday get decent at it.
I didn’t listen to techno until after I left high school.

Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Photo is a big thing for me as you may know. I’ve taken thousands of digital photos. Now I’ve also moved into old-skool b+w. After I get set up in my new place, I will be looking to find or create a darkroom. I want my apartment to be like my own gallery.
By the time I graduated high school, I had probably taken five rolls of photos, ever.

My friends who knew me as “damn the system Alex” would probably be surprised I’m now going to work for the man... smiling. And me, I’m shocked as hell. I’m a professional now and I have the resume and job to prove it.
When did that happen?

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?

My fraternal little brother recently gave me a signature, I just told him to write something and sign. He wrote: "Thanks for all those times you ‘hooked me up’ and the sage party advice"

And you may say to yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

"Sage party advice"?

I have more goals and ambitions every day. There’s lots of things in the world worth seeing, doing and learning; so many things that it becomes painful to have to choose which to pursue and which to let go.
In high school I was adrift with no goals, no direction, no purpose.

In the end of one chapter of my life, I stand at the brink of a new one. While I have ideas for it, it probably won’t be what I expect (if we learned anything from last time). My plans may change, my interests may change, my priorities may change. If there’s one thing I can count on, it’s change – at least I hope so.

Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was...

Once in a lifetime?
...isn’t enough. Here is to the future of surprising yourself, evolving yourself, finding yourself.

I’ve been planning this trip to Europe for a little while now. I’ve bought the Rough Guide to First-Time Europe, and am really getting worried about the logistics and making sure I don’t just sleep all day (solution: vibrating travel alarm clock).
Part of my worry stems from going off the well beaten track, my destinations are not exactly typical. Right now the plan it to fly to Scotland where my buddy Elliot can take care of me for a few days – luckily he’s going to be able to borrow a car (I didn’t even think about it). From there it is my intention to get to Copenhagen where I am meeting a guy I know through the internet. That sounds pretty stupid enh? Pushing that aside for a moment, Scotland to Copenhagen does not seem to be a well beaten travel route from my initial research, I may have to swim the North Sea. Copenhagen presents another snafu, it’s one of those non-euro countries. Prague, my next planned leg is also a non-euro countries, making three already. In Prague I am planning on meeting Dr Kukral from Rose (free place to stay!). Prague (Czech Republic) is also not covered if I get an Eurail pass, this means I probably will have to buy tickets to and from Prague. Great (no English at that website...). Anyways, from there things don’t present too much problems as I have no specific plans (fly out of Paris), but I’m not going anywhere that wont take an Eurail pass.
Traveling alone for the most part and speaking only English is also worrying me slightly.

All bitching aside, this is going to be fucking cool.

Hello everyone,

Here’s what’s going on with me.
I’ve completed my BS in computer science at Rose - I will be graduating this Saturday the 31st. June 1st I will be moving the last of my stuff to Chicago where I will be staying for much of the summer. I will then be taking a house hunting trip to my future home in Baltimore, MD. I have accepted a job in the Baltimore area, where I will start work August 18th.

Around June 18th I will be departing for my long awaited trip to Europe. Right now my itinerary brings me to Scotland, Copenhagen, Prague and eventually to Paris. I will be getting back July 21st-ish. After my trip I will be spending more time in Chicago and possibly visiting Tom in St Paul Minnesota. In the second week of August I will be moving to Baltimore.

Oh yes, I will be having a graduation party Sunday June 15th at my home in Chicago, if you’re in the area you are welcome to stop by!

Dr Hickey on the new Matrix:
So there’s a sex scene? In the real world? Now why would Neo and Trinity have sex in the real world when in The Matrix, ANYTHING is possible?
in memory of this wonderful class experience, I quoted “The Matrix” (original) in my final paper.

I will be done with school in less than 18 hours. Word.

My current phone contract will expire in August (just in time for my move... (to Baltimore, you people not paying attention)), this phone could be just too sexy a piece of technology to stay away from.

Today we had graduation rehearsal. Cue Keanu Reeves “Woah”.

After we figured out how to seat ourselves in order they told us some stuff. Then an alumnus spoke to us about the alumni dollar give back thingie. OK, this is how it works: the alumnus gives every person about to graduate a dollar, then during his speech he tries to convince us to donate back to Rose as alumni and start with that dollar. His speech was, by most students’ standards, crappy. Really crappy.
However, I came into the event already knowing what I was going to do and no speech, no matter how crappy, was going to deter me from giving that dollar to Rose. I am looking forward to being an alumnus of Rose and am looking forward to giving back more to the school which has given me great education, opportunities and memories.

This weekend could be nuts. We’ll see.

ooh, ooh, spot the fallacy:
a = b
a^2 = ab
a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2
(a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
a + b = b
2a = a
2 = 1

a crawl

Rory reminded me of the The Official Ninja Webpage the other day. I then remembered the The Official Engineer Webpage. Curious, I looked on the internet to see how many real ultimate power spoofs there are... the answer is a lot. Here’s a list.

Of course, of interest to my readers: EEs, the internet, geeks, and Americans.

Also, there was one about something called The Official “Time Cube” Webpage. What?

Digging a little, I found a website which is a bit of a disorganized attempt at either a really not-so funny joke or a really not-so funny scientific theory. Attempting to get a clearer idea of weather or not this thing was a joke, I looked at the Google related links. Apparently there was a lecture at MIT about it, but it still looks like a joke. Interestingly there’s a DMOZ.org category for TimeCube: alternate time systems

Looking in those, I read about New Earth Time, which seems like a good idea, kinda, but then you note that the whole thing is trademarked. They recommend an intriguing book called “Faster” which is about how we are speeding up (as a society) as time goes by. This is a neat idea to me that was first presented to me in my philosophy and politics of technology class a few years ago. It was interesting that back in the day before clocks, there was not as much of an idea of “wasting time”... it seems like the whole mindset would be different. Anyways, about then I realized the Internet was wasting my time.

Do you ever have nights where you intend to do lots of things but don’t do any?

Do you ever feel like you’ve only got three weeks left to live?

Do you ever feel glad to know so many cool people?

Do you ever worry that it’s going to be hard to find more such people and have a collegiate atmosphere with them?

Do you have professors that laugh and make fun of you when you’re late?

Do you feel like you’re hitting your rhythm?

Do you feel excited about what the future may bring?

Do you feel like you’re extremely lucky to be alive?
