went to an indie rock show with Phil after an excellent dinner in china town friday night. it was at the Abby Pub, an intimate venue not too far from my house. the show was the “second annual indy pop fest” according to the large banner across one of the walls, as the lead singer of the Hushdrops noted, “thanks to the abby pub for having this cool event, they really put the ‘y’ in ‘indie’”. the line up was the following:
Masters of the Hemisphere
Hushdrops
Aloha
Archer Prewitt
Elf Power
Phil was mostly interested in archer, who was really good. we got to the show midway through the masers and left in the middle of elf power, who was pretty good, but we were getting tired and saw the act we came for.
in other concert news, i already have tickets to a show in Seattle: Cake and The Flaming Lips. i have already seen The Flaming Lips, which was an excellent time: good music, crowd energy and crowd involvement. i am really looking forward to it already.
also, i’ve finally figured it out! (why i am poor company at school). i believe it has something to do with the fact that my happiness is directly proportional to how close i am to Terre Haute…Seattle should work really well if my hypothesis is correct :)
we leave in about 6 hours, 2300 miles, wheeeeeee.

*tada*
class has ended, a few academic lose ends to tie up then i’m off to Chicago for a few days before i go to my sweet apartment in Seattle, located here. it’s downtown which is a bit of a commute to Bellevue (where i’ll be working, around 20 minutes east) but i expect the area i will be in will be worth the longer drive.
junior year is almost over, i’ve been saying it often, but it’s freaking weird, this year has been a blur of academics and little else. speaking to Minufo in the house today, he was like “dude, you need to come into the house more, we never hang out anymore.” i knew this was way too true, but as i said to him “yeah, i know, but it’s not just you, it’s everyone”. looking back on the year the academic performance i have achieved has been very good, it has showed me a lot about myself (like i am not very good at it…) and made me much more employable. however, i think it perhaps has had too much a cost on the other aspects of my life, so i believe that next year i will be trying for a more happy medium.
i have assembled quite the senior project team (i am the leader, as usual), i believe it has some of the best people rose has to offer so i am really excited about that. our client is Microsoft (pretty impressive enh?) and basically we’re going to be making a mail client a demo for their new language C#, if it’s good ms will put it out as a demo (with source) on their MSDN cds or something. this is going to be challenging but rewarding i think, i am already talking to the client and making plans, but am really looking forward to getting into it hardcore next year.
other career news: the people i did research for last summer wrote a paper and submitted it to the DETC ’02, an ASME (american society of mechanical engineers) international design engineering technical conferences and the computers and information in engineering conference 2002 (quite the name…).
why is this cool? well, they talk a lot about my addition to the system and went ahead and smacked my name on the paper, good deal enh? you can find a copy of the paper here, my contributions all dealt with the information extraction system stuff i worked on last summer, a copy of my paper is here.
with all these developments and my recent induction into upe, i’ve made a little page about me, the professional.
pike day is tomorrow, yay!

i just finished reading crypto for my cryptography class. it is a horribly written book, with more exaggerated drama than a season of soap operas and metaphors that make you want to say “ow, my brain…” (most way worse than my soap opera one)

i love you mom, have a nice mother's day, love you too dad, happy (belated) birthday
checking my web page stats, may has been a terrible month traffic wise, probably in part due to the frequent outages of my host. the funny thing is always to look at what search strings hit my page, here they are for may so far: |
|---|
| Top 3 of 3 Total Search Strings |
|---|
|
|---|
| # | Hits | Search String |
|---|
|
|---|
| 1 | 1 | 33.33% | crotchless jeans | | 2 | 1 | 33.33% | deice photo finishing | | 3 | 1 | 33.33% | tampon removals | |
|---|
i think the only time i mention tampons is the single stream of thought i wrote. not sure where the others point to, funny though.

i'm stupid, dontcha know?
so in number theory today, Rickert starts talking about generating functions, and we’re figuring out the closed form of the Fibonacci sequence. to do this, we need to do a partial fraction expansion, which took about two pages worth of notes, for the most part this involved me just looking at the board and frantically copying down what Rickert wrote (he writes on the white board like twice as fast as i write on my paper). at the very end of it, he says “okay, any questions?”
you bet your ass there are, “do we need to know how to do this…” i begin
“for tomorrows test? no.” he cuts me off, i continue: “…ever?”
he seems a bit miffed at the question, “well, maybe for the final…”
“alright, well, i don’t really get this, and i don’t think you can explain it in the 5 minutes of class left…”
“oh no, here, let me show you”, he spends about 30 seconds scribbling on the board before the bell rings (yes, we have bells at Rose). “but you see the basic idea right?”
“er…right” i say. he smiles, i don’t think he’s getting it.
“perhaps i haven’t made something clear: i’m not smart” i say as everyone’s packing up and leaving. for some reason he doesn’t buy it: “you’re smart, i know, i see your homework.” i’m not beating his optimism any time soon, well maybe tomorrow’s test will… “you’ve also seen my tests…” i mutter as i pack up my stuff and go.
other news:
i will be staying in my current room next year, my roomie will be Matt McCormick.
also, Expedia found me a room mate from Cornell, so i will be in a 2 bedroom this summer downtown (sweet!).
i'm two for two in last second room mate scramble.
i was initiated into the Upsilon Pi Epsilon honors fraternity (for computer scientists) last night.
i have a shit ton of work to do, however it will only be over the next 11 days.

the number theory test went really bad for everyone, dr Rickert lowered his 20-40-60-80 curve for this test, making a 60 an a, this still was not enough to help me, and i hit the middle of the c range with a 37 (my favorite prime, coincidentally….yes, i do have a favorite prime, so what?). so there’s another good reason for Rickert to give me a c in his class…
so everything was set for the summer with me living downtown Seattle with another intern from Rose in a nice subsidized apartment. then suddenly my room mate backs out for financial reasons and decides to live at his home which will have like, an hour commute each way…which leaves me without a room mate. while this only sets me back about 50$ a month (two bed room vs studio apartment), i am still a bit disappointed because it would have been nice to be living with someone. i am actually so set on getting a room mate that i’m asking the intern coordinator if there is anyone from a different school who might want a room mate. we’ll see how it turns out.
less than 3 weeks left of junior year. yikes.
